Start here
From zero to your first crew.
Five steps, about fifteen minutes, entirely on your own hardware. Keep this page open next to your terminal — each step carries the command, and what to do when it doesn’t work.
- A container runtime — Docker, Podman, or Apple Containers
- One LLM API key — or none at all, with a local model on Ollama

$ brew install crewship-ai/tap/crewship$ crewship doctor$ crewship start
Homebrew tap — the sidecar ships in the same formula. `doctor` finds your container runtime and names anything missing before you start.
You need a container runtime before this step: Docker, Podman, Colima, OrbStack, or Apple Containers on macOS 26+. `crewship doctor` tells you which one it found.
What if it doesn’t work?
`crewship start` exits complaining about Docker
Run `crewship doctor`. It checks the container runtime and every runtime dependency, and names the one that is missing.
Port 8080 is already taken
Stop whatever holds the port, or start on another one and use that address everywhere below.
brew can't find the formula
The formula lives in a tap, not homebrew-core. The full name matters: `crewship-ai/tap/crewship`.
Crew is sailing. Where next?
Three doors, not twenty. The rest of the documentation is there when you need a specific answer.
